The Eventstellar concept began on October 21st, 2015, when Jesse Rómlárson finished his first demo song called “Beyond” and launched a video channel for future projects related to space on the same day. The date was chosen as a tribute to the “Back to the Future” film, tied to his enduring fascination with themes of time travel, space exploration, multiverses, the immersive greatness of the cosmos, and the mysteries of the universe. Driven by this fascination, Jesse envisioned these themes with music to craft a unique artistic identity.

With the goal of building a multimedia platform for cinematic musical experiences inspired by film soundtracks and capturing the grandeur and emotion of epic storytelling, this early concept laid the foundation for what would later evolve into Eventstellar.

At the same time, Jesse was part of a cover rock band called Sojourner, formed with his friend and bassist John Scatter, along with drummer Siyo Michaan, during his time in Mexico as part of a foreign exchange program. The trio began performing small gigs, showcasing early tracks such as “A School Tale”, “Leviathan”, “The Endless Frontier”, “Sometimes”, “Underground” and “Hey, Darling”.

These songs were later recorded in a modest second-hand bedroom studio, capturing a raw yet passionate energy. Although unpolished, they offered a glimpse into the sonic identity that Eventstellar would eventually refine, sparking interest within the local music scene. Not fully satisfied with the name ‘Sojourner’, John proposed “Soyuz”, derived from the Russian word for “Union”. The band adopted this name and continued performing with it until November 2015.

However, concerns about potential political interpretations led the group to consider a new name. After some discussion, they all agreed on “Stillorgan”, inspired by a Dublin suburb that resonated with Jesse’s mind long ago.

Just as the group began gaining momentum, Siyo decided to leave the band and return to his homeland to pursue his own path. Shortly after, John also stepped back from the project at the end of 2015, leaving Jesse to carry the vision forward on his own. Undeterred, Jesse remained focused on creating and channeling his determination into shaping Eventstellar into the groundbreaking project he had always envisioned.

In late January 2016, Jesse left Mexico and moved to Dublin to gain new perspectives and continue developing the project. While attending an English course at University College Dublin, he began searching for an affordable recording studio to work on the demos he had written with his former bandmates. By early May, Jesse started working on the initial layers of the song “Legacy”. During the recording process, he met Eoin Belfield, a session bassist and assistant audio engineer, who contributed to record the bass line for the track.

Eoin introduced Jesse to Matt Dublin, a producer and mixing engineer who later handled the production of the song along with two others included in Eventstellar’s first single. The collaboration extended to two additional tracks, “A School Tale” and a raw demo titled “Without”. Together, Jesse, Eoin, and Matt completed what became Eventstellar’s debut single, Early Sessions.

While working on Early Sessions, Eoin introduced Jesse to Nevan Lochlann, a drummer and his classmate at University College Dublin, who later would become Eventstellar’s drummer.

Now integrated as a trio, Jesse shared three additional songs he had written—“Freedom”, “I’m Here”, and “The Best Days of My Life”. These tracks reflected his experiences in Mexico and drew heavily on late ’90s influences, blending elements of Latin-American rock, Irish rock, and Brit rock. The group—Jesse, Eoin, Matt, and Nevan—reworked the songs from scratch, aiming to explore a new style. Their collaboration led to the release of Eventstellar’s first official single, Eleutheria.

After recording Eleutheria, Nevan, Eoin, and Jesse decided to perform a few gigs together for fun at pubs in Cork and southern Dublin. During this time, Nevan’s friend, Icelandic mastering producer Thor Linnane, invited them to stay in Iceland and play two shows in Reykjavík. The trio, already in the country, embraced the opportunity and performed a mix of covers and original songs. Over four lively nights, they connected with new audiences.

For the Reykjavík performances, the trio performed under the name “Messier”, inspired by the Messier catalog of galaxies—an idea that came from the whole band and brought them closer to the name they use today.

On the third night, Jon Gilmour, a friend of Nevan and Thor, joined the group on stage, playing and improvising. Intrigued by the band’s dynamic, Jon asked to join them for another gig to showcase his skills. After several gigs as a quartet, Jon began contributing to the group, marking the next step in the project’s evolution. With the band fully formed, the members of the newly established rock band brought their unique backgrounds and inspirations to shape the group’s musical identity.

Eoin Belfield, on bass, provided a precise and steady rhythmic foundation, giving the band its heartbeat. Jon Gilmour, inspired by the legendary guitarist who shared his surname, crafted transcendent guitar solos that transported listeners to distant sonic realms. Nevan Lochlann, on drums, combined his dynamic style with electronic drumming techniques, infusing the band’s sound with electrifying energy and a touch of otherworldly ambiance. Finally, Jesse Rómlárson, as the voice and songwriter, drew from his diverse influences and creative vision to become the driving force behind Eventstellar’s inspiring sound.

Not entirely satisfied with the name “Messier”, the band began searching for a name that better reflected their musical vision. One night, after spending the evening at a pub with friends, the bandmates noticed the aurora borealis appearing in the sky.

Intrigued, they decided to travel to the Grótta Island Lighthouse for a better view. Standing under the northern lights, Eoin remarked on the beauty of the event, with the stars shining brightly in the night sky. This moment inspired the idea of combining “event” and “stars” or “starry” into a concept. Jon suggested replacing “stars” with “stellar”, a synonym that resonated with the celestial theme.

From that moment, the band collectively agreed on the name “Eventstellar”—a fusion of “event”, representing cosmic phenomena, and “stellar”, capturing their celestial inspiration.

With the name decided, the band turned their attention to refining their musical identity. They are coining the term “Transcendental Rock” to describe their evolving style—a fusion of ambient sounds, cinematic scores, dream pop, shoegaze, and dream rock. Their sound incorporates expansive use of reverbs and delays, alongside futuristic and electronic elements such as synthwave, progressive electronic, ethereal wave, and space rock. Inspired by the magnificence of the cosmos and the mysteries of the universe, their music also draws on Neo-psychedelia and cosmic jazz, emphasizing exploratory and space-inspired themes.

The band envisioned not just music but a multimedia experience where their videos and visuals would align with these celestial concepts. By blending innovative soundscapes with their cosmic inspiration, they aim to define “Transcendental Rock” as a genre that transcends boundaries, offering listeners a journey through space, time, and emotion.
